South of Thailand: 5 Best Places to Photograph in Phuket

Updated: Apr 30, 2023

Below are photographs from my trip in Phuket.

❶ KATA BEACH

Of course, just because it’s famous it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be mentioned. Kata beach is bustling with many activities including snorkeling, surfing, jet skiing and paragliding.

All of which are great subjects for street and candid photography - be respectful of others’ personal space though. If you like taking food photographs, there are plenty of restaurants, cafés, bars and food vendors along the beach.

❷ MAI KHAO BEACH

This is the longest beach in Phuket with a length of nearly 10 kilometers. It’s a lot less bustling compared other popular beaches like Kata and Patong.

That said, it’s very peaceful and, in my opinion, the most beautiful beach in Phuket. And unlike any other beaches in the world, it has a unique location right next to the Phuket International Airport (HKT). For photography enthusiasts, this place offers a rare opportunity to capture an image of a low flying passenger plane as it makes the landing.

❸ OLD PHUKET TOWN SUNDAY NIGHT WALKING STREET (LARD YAI)

This is probably Phuket’s most popular walking street. Every Sunday, they close down the Historical Thalang Road and rent out the space for local food vendors, clothing vendors, street performers and other merchants.

This is a gold mine for street photographer and videographer. Beautiful historical building in the background, street performers triggering all kinds of emotion from the audience, and lots of positive energy brightening up the atmosphere. The only downside is that there are way too many people …

❹ OLD PHUKET TOWN STREET ART

For some reasons, I didn’t see a lot of articles talking about the murals and street arts in the Old Phuket Town. All of them are amazing and worthy of being photographed.

❺ SAMET NANGSHE VIEWPOINT

This is not of the most famous place in Phuket because it’s far. From Kata Beach, it would take about 2 hours by car. However, it’s not exaggerating to say that this is probably the most beautiful view in Thailand, especially during sunset. It’s a hidden gem that should be in your bucket list!

What I like about this place is the fact that it has an amazing restaurant right at the viewpoint, so you’re not driving all the day way there just to take a few photos and then leave. No, you can sit down, relax, order some pizzas and enjoy the atmosphere for as long as you like.

You can catch the sunrise starting from 5:30am. I was there in the afternoon, so I didn’t see the sunrise, but it was still very memorable!
